A few years ago a friend in the tree service business worked at the Bartlett Arboretum in southern Kansas, a wonderful privately owned sanctuary with massive trees and gardens. I was able to get some very interesting elm slabs from him when he finished working at the Arb. Elm is a difficult wood to dry. It twists, moves and basically makes the life of a woodworker miserable. This slab, although difficult to work with, survived the drying process.
