Four-drawer cherry bureau

This four-drawer bureau with two sliding doors is made of cherry, figured & spalted maple door panels, and bamboo. The custom hardware was made by local iron artist Kate Dinneen. The bureau is 44″ wide, 48″ tall, and 19″ deep. I used bamboo for the bottom of the storage area behind the two sliding doors.

This piece won second place in the 2004 LOYO (Lawrence Own-Your-Own) show. The judge (Ed Barr, Director of Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University) wrote, “Rick Stein’s “Bureau” and Will Orvedal’s “Display Stand” won second and third place for their beautiful design and exquisite craftsmanship. I encourage visitors to examine these pieces in minute detail—the handles, the use of inlay, the grain of the wood—each piece holds countless surprises to delight the viewer.” Will Orvedal is a friend and has had a strong influence in my work. I’m honored that the judge addressed our pieces together.
